NYC TREK

The MMBC hosted a huge collection of events in the 2024 fall semester, including a legendary trip to New York, representing our first club trek. On this trek, team members flew out for the weekend of October 4th to discover what the music industry is really all about.

The trip started with a tour of Republic Studios. At this historic studio, the team met legendary mixing engineers and the division manager, Rich LaPointe, who explained that the future of the industry lies with their new Dolby Atmos technology. Nothing compared to stepping into the studio and hearing the 360 audio mixes of “All Night Long” by Lionel Richie and “Boom” by Tiesto in style!

The second stop of the tour was United Talent Agency, one of the leading agencies in the entertainment industry. The team sat down with the talented Co-Head of Global Music at UTA, Samantha Kirby Yoh. Mixing her unique sense of humor with her years of experience, Samantha taught us that working at an agency is all about understanding and empathizing with clients and connecting the dots across industries to bring new opportunities to artists and clients alike.

Our final destination was an intimate talk with the staff at Glassnote Records, which brought up icons like the multi-talented Childish Gambino. Former MMBC member and current social-media manager Ethan Matt led the team in a tour and discussion on how an independent label operates, and even gifted the members cd’s and vinyls of the Glassnote discography!

And no MMBC trip is complete without a rooftop afterparty! The team celebrated their first successful trek by conversing with some of the industry’s leaders and dancing the night away.
